Bright cool morning at the Lordsburg KOA... I did some laundry (towels) since it was the least expensive place we've had. Oliver finished his email to his classmates, and Jonathan worked on fixing all the holes in the bike tires from last night. Amelia worked hard on a Christmas word search. Oliver was milling around and found a bird's nest in the tree beside our site. Jonathan teased me about the "fall colours" I was witnessing here at the site -- a reference the fall colours we missed in Virginia.
We departed around 11:20am after a busy but relaxed morning. Took the Hwy 10 West... saw several large signs on the side of the Hwy warning of Dust Storms... with instructions on what to do: PULL OFF ROAD. TURN OFF ENGINE. STAY BUCKLED. FEET OFF BRAKES. Yikes. Can't imagine being caught in a dust storm on the highway where you cannot see a thing. Scary.
Within half an hour, we were welcomed into yet another new state on our travel list ~ Arizona!
1:20pm we pulled off in Benson for diesel. The station was closed so we had to drive further into down to find some at the Speedway. 123187km on odometer.
Driving along we saw our first large cactus on the side of the highway! Yay Arizona!! The temp was 21c and quite lovely. We had booked the KOA Picacho/Tucson and arrived around 3:15pm. The place was super lovely... gravel sites with nice trees. We immediately got our suits on and went over to the pool. Amelia dipped her toe and declared it was TOO COLD to swim in. She's pretty tough, so this meant it was probably freezing, lol. She refused to go in. I too dipped my toe in and decided it was a big NO for me.
Jonathan arrived moments later and tested it but did a cannonball into the pool regardless. He dared anyone to cannonball in and he'd give them $5. Amelia and I maintained a hard no on that. Oliver was tempted and sure enough, he put on his snorkel mask and jumped in... huffing and gasping his way to the opposite side of the pool to get out! Nice work, Ollie!!!! Five dollars richer, he donned his robe and he and Amelia went into the little community room to play foosball. Jonathan went and asked about the pool heater and it turns out it was in the process of being fixed. No luck for a warm swim.
Spent the rest of the evening hanging out... Oliver worked on stop motion videos and sling shots. He set up a super cool timelapse video of an ant colony and placed a small piece of lemon beside the hole. The subsequent video was super neat to watch as the ants moved the fruit around and the sun set.
Jonathan worked on some carving and knife sharpening. Amelia was busy painting her rock collection, and I did some research on Phoenix and did some blogging. Later on Oliver got some Minecraft time and Amelia made some Christmas art.
