DAY 117 : November 1/22 Tueday. Corpus Christi, Texas

Woke up at 6:30am to thunder and lightening storm and massive rains. I got up around 7:30am and took my book and the laptop into the living room and made some coffee.

When the kids got up they fussed with their candy sorting and categorizing some more and the I forced them to go have showers. Oliver's hair has really turned into something wild these days! It was perfect for his halloween costume, but now it's just looking like he lives in the bushes! Freshly showered, the kids worked on some schoolwork in their books, then we put on Edward Scissorhands while Jonathan made pancakes.

Despite the crazy weather, Jonathan and Ollie went out onto the beach to fly the trainer kite for a bit. They got SOAKED but had a great time. Once Uncle Mikey surfaced, he had some leftover pancakes and then went out to pump up his kite. Jonathan and Mike got their kiting gear ready - it was WINDY and they were pumped to get out on the waves in the churning ocean to get those kites in the air. They have often been skunked with wind on their kiting trips together, and darn it if they were going to miss a windy opportunity even if it was stormy and wild out there! haha.

The launched from the beach out front and did a planned "down winder" and would message me when they got to a place they could land and I would pick them up in the rental car at one of the beach access roads a few miles down the island.

Back at the AirBnB, the kiddos and I worked on some crafty projects... I had two balloons I'd found at home and tucked away with future crafty/paper maché projects in mind. Now was the time! They did paper maché on the balloon to create a bowl of sorts, with the plan to glue a collage of their candy wrappers on the outside. It was a great little activity for all and a good use of the large space to create in! (paper maché in the rig was NOT an option, haha).

After those were left to dry, they got working on a stop motion video of Skelly eating candies. Amelia's first official stop motion film. Oliver helped with the filming and she had the idea and the planned it all out. pretty fun. I can't get it to play here unfortunately. I'll need Jonathan's tech abilities.

Eventually, we got the call from Mike and Jsy that they would be landing at Beach Access #2 in a short while, so we waited a few minutes and then hopped in the car and drove down the island to pick them up. We could drive right onto the hard packed beach there and get them. They had a blast... very wild out there! Smiles all around and thankful for the easy pick up.

Back at the house, they menfolk got showered and we had lunch and hung out for awhile. The kids finished off their stop motion film. It wasn't long before Mike and Jay decided to go out again for another session to make the most of the wind today in fear there might not be any other windy days. This time Mike drove us all up to Port Aransas pier up the island so they could do a down-winder and end up at the AirBnB. (opposite of this morning). It was still pretty wild out there!!!

Kids goofed around on the beach and lifeguard post while Mike and Jay got their kites blown up and gear on. Then off they went!! into the foamy fray for a long kite all the way down the beach a few miles. I watched them kite away for a long time until I was sure they wouldn't need any "rescuing" close to this end of things. I loved watching all the little shorebirds dashing about eating mussels out of the sand.

Once satisfied, the kids and I loaded up in the car to head back down the island to the house. On the way we saw the big souvenir/beach store with the giant shark out front and Ollie really wanted to stop and check it out, so I pulled over and they posed in the shark's mouth and another smaller shark. Poked out heads in the store (the wind was so strong that when we opened the door, about 20 boogie boards flew off the shelves with the gust). No one working in the store even noticed. Ollie scrambled to put them all back up and then we had a wander around. No one in there. Lots of short-shorts and brightly coloured tanks and hoodies... all very beachy and summery.

Back at the house, the kids made a fort out of the sheets on their bunk beds. Amelia worked on a wire framed bear head with some duct tape and teeth made out of spikes from a palm frond they had snuck into the car by the store earlier. I let them tuck in and watch some SpongeBob Squarepants.

By 6:15pm they menfolk were back on the beach out front of the house! We could see them from way up the beach when I peeked earlier hoping to get sight of them. What a session!

Exhausted and beat up by the waves, they were tired and happy. Jsy made bean wraps for dinner with Oliver's help.
