DAY 64 : September 9/22 Friday. Chéticamp, NS to Upper Tantallon, NS - visit with the Doucets!

Woke up in our cozy set up here at Waves End RV Park, with the wind blowing outside. 8am and kiddos were in our bed in a dogpile of snuggles. After an easy breakfast, the kids went out to fly the trainer kite in the strong winds while we got packed up. Heard the thud of the kite hitting the side of the RV a couple times, gah! Kids and I walked up to the office so I could buy one of the adorable hand hooked mini rug pictures of a camper (see above!)... it's about 5x5" and I love it. We said our goodbyes to Audrey. Jack wasn't there this morning but Audrey said, "Jackie says to tell you it was a pleasure to know you, and safe travels!".

We left Waves End around 9:45am and drove south towards Margaree Harbour. (side note: Jonathan felt something on his ankle and it was a little teeny inch-worm. I took it back to the kids to keep them entertained until we stopped to let it out). On the drive we passed "LARCH WOOD Cutting Boards" retail shop where two guys were putting their sign up out front. We recognized this as the cutting board company that our neighbours were telling us about - they have one. Kinda neat! Passed the factory outlet after that, too!

Hung a right on NB Hwy 19 at Margaree Forks and then a left onto N-395 South towards Scotsville. We had heard about a hike called Egypt Falls and decided to give it a try. By 10:30am we had finally found the trailhead (basically unmarked except for a tiny little knot of flagging tape at the top), and no one else was parked there at that point. We searched for some kind of parking lot on the narrow gravel road and realized there was no such place. Pulled over on the side of the road as best we could in a slightly wider space and got our backpack loaded with water and some snacks. From 11-11:45am we hiked down a steep trail to the falls, had a look around and admired the wide waterfalls and cold, cold pool at its base, then hiked the steep trail back up. They had strategically placed ropes to assist in the descent and climb.

After our lovely hike, we hopped back in the car and drove the gravel road back to the Hwy and kept heading back towards Nova Scotia. Ended up on the 105 to the 104 towards Antigonish where we stopped at the Circle K to get diesel (112389km) - passed St. Francis Xavier University where Dieter used to teach. It was about 1:30pm when we arrived at the gas station, got diesel and pulled up by the side of the building to go in and get treats. We noticed we were blocking the Air Pump and sure enough a car pulled up in front of us hoping to use the air pressure. It was a couple of young guys, super friendly and they said the hose would reach and not to worry about moving. I watched him try to use his credit card to get the thing to turn on and it wasn't working. I reached out our driver's door and offered him a twoonie which he took with a smile. Nice friendly exchange. Very Maritime vibe.

We had hoped to return some LED strip lights that the kids bought at Home Hardware in Alberton (it was way too long and didn't plug into a USB like we thought). I searched up a HH close by and found one in Payzant and did a detour at 4pm. They didn't sell them there and wouldn't accept them as a return unfortunately. Jonathan managed to buy some wrench set he liked, so not a total failed detour.

Back onto the NS102 South... passed a cool stock car racetrack where there must have been something happening that evening. Cars loaded on flat decks all over, and cars getting ready to race. Neat to see.

By 5pm we were at the Tantallon Sobey's picked up groceries and getting some treats at the liquor store and headed up the winding road into the lovely neighbourhood of our friends, Carolyn and Justin and family. Justin and Jonathan used to play hockey together about a decade ago in Vancouver. Carolyn and I would hang out and chat while we watched the games. I had seen her post last weekend that they were camping in Kouchibouguac NB and we had just missed them there by mere days. We connected on Messenger and voila! here we are! rolling up into their driveway to hang out again!! so fun!

We received a very warm welcome from the Doucet's to their beautiful home and amazing property. Such a cool backyard with a lake (pond) at the bottom of the yard through some very pretty woods. Kids loved the tree house (tree mansion platfrom?) and the awesome dock. Meems and Izzy hit it off crafting, and Liam and Ollie worked on cardboard and tape armour and other games. Ethan was off to hockey. We enjoyed veggie and salmon burgers and drinks and visited late into the evening before dragging all our tired kiddos to bed! (barely got through 1/2 chapter of Anne of Green Gables)

 So great to catch up!!
