DAY 115 : October 30/22 Sunday. Port Lavaca, TX to Corpus Christi, TX (South Padre Island)

Crepes and candy for breakfast! Can't believe how much candy those two got in a matter of minutes last night. Most efficient candy haul ever, haha.

Amelia did some reading and Ollie had some time for games on his phone. I did some dishes, wuhoo! Jonathan tried out some more fishing - still pumped about the possibility of catching another red drum for eating. No luck though.

9:45am we hit the pool again and the hot tub (now clean... they had a company come in). We packed up and hit the road around 11:30am saying bye to Jen and Todd and waving to Jonathan's fishing/whisky buddy on the way out.

Took the Texas Hwy 175south to the TX35 headed for south padre island. We passed farmland and one farm even had a couple emus on it! Passed wind-farms, and fields with texas longhorn cows. We also got passed by a pick up truck that had a guy sitting in the back of it on a box! yikes. Lots of butterflies on the route as well, unfortunately many ending up in our grill and windscreen.

Saw a huge bridge being built into Corpus Christi. At 1:30pm we were at the CC visitor centre. Super nice little space with a lovely helper named, Marisol. We waited for her to help some seniors that had rolled in there just before us. She gave us great intel on what neighbourhood to trick or treat in. They were also having a halloween celebration and giving out candy at the Vistor Centre tomorrow. She recommended Wood River - her community about 15 minutes out of town - for awesome trick or treating.

Armed with good intel, we hit up the Walmart on the way to Mustang Island where Jonathan's brother Mike had rented an AirBnB for us all to stay in while they (hopefully) kiteboarded from the beach. It was 30C out but not very windy.

By 4pm we were at the rental house... there had been an issue with the original place rented (rat infestation) so we were bumped to a different one for the first night (#12) then the remainder of the nights beachfront in #19. This was on Mustang Island in the Lost Colony complex. It had a pool and Meems was excited to give it a try, but it was too cold, even for her!  We discovered the nasty sand/grass spurs on our walk back. Ouch!!!! and almost impossible to remove from the soles of our shoes.

We walked to the beach instead and explored the waves and watched little shorebirds dipping and pecking at the sand. It was good to be on the beach. We were all a little discombobulated at having a place to stay, but it not being the place for the duration yet. I found one of the little mussel holes in the sand and dug down to try and find the digger. It was so fast digging down its tunnel, I could sometimes feel it in the ground and it would disappear under my fingers. As I dug, the wet liquidy sand would fill in around my hand and the vibrations through it were super cool. The kids were in there investigating right away. It was like quicksand... you could move your hand in it if you moved slowly and it would lock in like oobleck when you moved fast. Super cool. We also found a little butterfly on the beach who was still alive, but sandy. We named him GG (Green Guy) and brought him up to the boardwalk and put him on some flowers to recover (I doubt he will recover, but it felt better than leaving him in the waves).

Back up at the house, Uncle Mikey arrived! We made him delicious fish tacos (our specialty) and had a nice visit. Kids watched a movie in the bedroom with the two double beds in it... excited to have a big bed each all to themselves.
