DAY 94 : October 9/22 Sunday. Cape Hatteras, Outerbanks, North Carolina

Up early (too early... 6:30am) because of the neighbour's dogs barking.

Kids did some math and reading, then we hit the swimming pool and hot tub for the morning. (hello, vacation mode). Then back to the rig for some lunch.

We all biked to Kitty Hawk Kites down the road to inquire about kiting lessons for Oliver (he showed interest, which just makes Jonathan's day!). They didn't have any lessons happening and also didn't have any harnesses that would be small enough for our little dude. Moseyed around the neat (And endless) shop and bought an outerbanks sticker. Also saw in the toy section in the back that they had quite a selection of wooden toy guns... While the odd "pop gun" can been seen as kinda fun, I'm still not a huge fan. But these elastic shooters were next level. When you see things like "junior AK-47" stamped on the side of them, it's super depressing. They had all kinds of wooden guns, "just like dad's" I'm guessing. Yuck. super yuck.

Rode further down the road along the bike path to Rodanthe Pier. This is where Jonathan and Ollie had walked to the other day. We enjoyed an ice cream treat there and watched the fisher people up on the pier from the beach. (opted not to pay to go on the pier, and turns out it was a better view from the beach anyhow). We made super fun sand sculptures and self portraits on the beach in the sand.

We lounged and sunbathed and built sand art for quite awhile before deciding to head back. I chose to walk back along the beach, and let Ollie and Amelia ride their bikes (Ollie is usually standing on the pannier-rack of Jonathan's bike, and I ride his bike with the seat cranked up) back to the rig. Oliver had a sore toe... split from all the swimming and rough bottoms of the pool. He was quite upset when trying to get his shoe on and get on his bike, especially after Jay and Meems had already hopped on their bikes and ridden out of sight in the parking lot. I walked him over to them and off he went, but was quite upset. Bit of a rough ride home, but I had a lovely walk along the beach and a nice chat along the way on the phone with my mum and dad. Little shorebirds along the way and cool platformed houses and rentals along the beach.

Back at the rig, kids had snacks then did the dishes outside on the picnic table. They are amazing dishwashers... easier outside than inside with our little sink. We reeeeeeally need to get on this program more often, haha. Kids and Jonathan sat around the campsite and worked on carving their walking staffs. It's been awhile since we have have chill time to do this. Pretty nice.

I walked over in the evening to do laundry. I had walked both kids over to catch the glowtrain (they took their glow sticks and ollie returned his after in an attempt to be more environmentally conscientious). They had a ride while I went just across the pool to the laundromat, and then I rode with them a second time around since there was space. They walked back to the campsite while I went to check on the dryer. It wasn't quite finished, so I walked across the road and admired the absolutely STUNNING sunset. It was like a Henry Roy Vickers painting come to life. Photos do not do it justice. The reds and oranges were SO intense. One of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen. Equally beautiful was the moonrise over the opposite bank across the campground. I picked up a book from the free little library before I crossed the road back to the KOA.  After I got back from the sunset/laundry excursion, we walked to the moon rise side as a family to admire our moonshadows (thinking of Opa) and the glittering moonlight on the ocean. Pretty spectacular show of nature tonight.
