Big day out in the city... caught a taxi ($8) to the Salem commuter train that would take us into downtown Boston. We couldn't find anywhere to buy a ticket, and had split up in an attempt to search the station for an a ticket kiosk. Jonathan called saying hurry to the platform, but we were mere minutes too late getting there and had to wait another half hour or so for the next train. Doh! He had found another passenger to ask and it turns out you can buy them on the train, there's not kiosk here. When the next train finally rolled up, we hopped on and sat up on the top of the "double decker" car. Nobody came to collect our tickets, and no one was waiting when we got off the train, so it turned out to be a free ride in. As we emerged from North Station, we tried to get our bearings and realized as we were walking through the underground area, that we were underneath TD Gardens! the arena where the Bruins play hockey! As we were leaving the station, we saw people lining up at some of the doors and asked what was happening at the gardens today. A lovely, well dressed couple said it was a season ticket holder "welcome to the season" event. We chatted a bit and it turned out that they have a boat at Winter Harbour where we are camping, and Dorothy's brother walks there every morning... she said to say hi if we saw him tomorrow! funny coincidence!
The SS Constitution! Very cool to see. Went through security screening to be allowed to tour the wharf beside it and board the SS Constitution. Super cool in there. There were several groups of US Marines there doing various stations of training and learning about the ship. One of them was to learn how to position and fire one of the old cannons, another seemed to be coming up with a good marching song. It added an extra element of interest to touring the ship.
